While you’ll need to visit a dentist to know for sure whether or not you have a cavity, there are some signs to watch out for. In today’s post, we talk about red flags that may indicate you have tooth decay.
A cavity is an area of permanent damage to the surface of the tooth. If left untreated, cavities will grow larger, eventually destroying the tissues supporting your tooth, such as your nerve, gums, and bone. Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth, usually from an unhealthy diet of sugary and starchy foods and/or poor oral care.
There are a number of signs that you may have a cavity in your mouth. These include pain, sensitivity, visible holes in the teeth, and tooth discoloration (specifically black, brown, or white stains). The pain will often occur when you bite down or are eating something sweet, hot, or cold.
Cavities are one of the most common health issues. They’re also quite preventable with daily oral hygiene, routine visits to the dentist and a balanced diet. Brush your teeth at least twice per day for two minutes each time; floss at least once daily; visit the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and exam; limit sugary and starchy foods and instead consume a healthy diet of whole foods, fruits, veggies, and lean protein.
