Have you ever looked at a celebrity’s smile and wondered what they did to achieve such straight, white teeth? Chances are they had a little help from porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are carefully crafted to mimic the appearance of natural teeth–only better!
Porcelain veneers are customized in terms of size, shape, and color based on a patient’s unique specifications and needs. Once they are personalized, they are placed over the front of a patient’s teeth to permanently enhance their appearance.
Veneers can be used for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. In some cases, a patient will have one or two front teeth that have been chipped from dental trauma. Dental bonding or crowns can work well for this too, but patients can also use veneers on their front teeth with beautiful and natural results.
Porcelain veneers are often used for strictly cosmetic reasons. If you have a front tooth that’s always bothered you because it just doesn’t quite fit in with the others, a custom veneer can be used to make your smile appear more uniform. Veneers can also be placed on all of the front teeth to enhance the overall appearance of your smile.
Veneers are considered a permanent treatment due to the prep work that must be done before they can be placed. To keep the veneers looking nice and natural, the teeth are reshaped, meaning a small amount of enamel is removed to ensure that there is plenty of room for the veneers. Once tooth enamel is removed, a dental restoration of some kind must always be in place to support the tooth and protect it from potential damage.
